Ranking New York's "pretty boy" athletes

What's hotter than New York sports? Well, if you believe the gossip magazines and blogs, it's New York's athletes. Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez primping in the mirror, new Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez pictured half naked amidst similarly clad women, mentions of Derek Jeter out on the town with . . .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but after some deliberation, we picked out the prettiest of New York's pretty boys and asked some experts - Men's Fitness magazine editor Roy S. Johnson; Deadspin.com creator and New York Magazine writer Will Leitch, and ESPN columnist Jemele Hill - for their comments.

tender buttons

Although it’s named for a 1914 culinary essay by Gertrude Stein, this Upper East Side button boutique has little to do with that original; save for the fact that the store’s inventory, like Stein’s elongated prose, seems to go on and on and on. Even if you aren’t particularly attached to the little knobs that hold your clothing together, visit this museum-like shop to check out antique pieces that are more statement accessories than simple adornments, or for special buttons to fasten a baby’s hand-knit welcome-home sweater or your ‘new’ vintage coat. In addition to some 400 styles of blazer buttons alone, the vast stock impresses with popular military style clasps and serious gawker pieces in kaleidoscope glass and fossilized ivory; some even resemble 18th-century mini paintings. Those with fashion courage can buy single buttons to mismatch by design.

performance bike

We try one of the new eco-friendly, electric motorbikes as they make their debut on Isle of Man's notorious race course.

They laughed at Thomas Edison. And in the world of motorcycle racing, where loud, fast and smelly are good, some see electric bikes at the Isle of Man TT as a joke too.

When the flag drops on Friday, June 12, though, the TTXGP will be the first zero-emissions grand prix in history. Notoriously tough on both man and machine, “the Island” is the perfect place to test the promise of electric motorcycles. And with 17 international teams lining up to do just that, with the official backing of the world governing body for motorcycle sport, the event will be a genuine trial of performance and stamina.

the tennis channel

If you are not a tennis fan, now is probably a great time to get into the sport with the French Open.
Live coverage starts each morning at 5AM EST on the Tennis channel and moves over to ESPN2 at 12 PM EST, and any critical matches you missed during the morning hours, ESPN will show from aboutu 3-6 because by that time live play has concluded in France.

Here are men and women who don't get paid by the season, they get paid by their performance. This is why I think from a competitive level tennis is better than the four major sports (yes hockey is a major sport contrary to most people's beliefs). Here you have people fighting for every last point because if they don't they'll be bounced from the tournament. If you saw the match between 20 Marat Safin and Josselin Quanna you know what I'm talking about. Ouanna wins the match 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 3-6, 10-8 in a match lasting 4 hours and 30 minutes.

herndon festival

The June 5 First Friday attractions include music ranging from acoustic rock to soulful ballads and from a piano quartet to Latin American folk music, as well as wine tastings and plenty of art.
In Herndon, Friday Night Live has a festival atmosphere. Each week, from May through August, Herndon hosts a free concert from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on the town green. A crowd of children gather in front of the stage having a grand time, with their parents standing back, having their own fun while watching over them. Tips are accepted; they're donated to Herndon High School's after-prom and all-night graduation parties.
Friday Night Live is on hold this week because of the Herndon Festival, which will offer plenty of music as well as other events downtown during the weekend. Burnt Sienna plays when Friday Night Live resumes June 5.
For a full list of what's going on in Leesburg each month, check out leesburgfirstfriday.com. For more on Friday Night Live, visit www.herndonrocks.com.

2009 Stanley Cup Finals Finals: Penguins-Red Wings TV Schedule and Spread

If you are a regular reader of this site, you know that I do not write much about hockey; and by “much” I mean that I don’t write about it all. It’s not that I don’t “like” hockey or that I don’t appreciate the greatness and athletic ability of the players in the NHL, but I never played hockey growing up in Indiana and never developed the passion for it that I did for football, basketball, and baseball. However, as a devoted sports lover, I enjoy watching any sporting event in which the best players in the world at their respective sport are playing with something great on the line. Certainly, when the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins take to the ice in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals, some of the best hockey players in the world will be battling it out for something great on the line.

Woman Jailed For Stalking 'American Idol' Contestant Diana DeGarmo

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — An Australian woman was sentenced to more than two years in prison on Friday for stalking an "American Idol" contestant over the Internet from the other side of the world.
Tanya Maree Quattrocchi, 23, pleaded guilty earlier this month to four charges of cyber-stalking for hacking into Diana DeGarmo's MySpace account and intercepting her e-mails and those of her mother, Brenda, and housemate, model Donielle Morris. DeGarmo was the 2004 runner-up in the U.S. television singing contest.
Quattrocchi had initially pretended to be a 14-year-old fan to join the singer's MySpace site before hacking into it.

sohrab mirza

NEW DELHI, May 29 (Reuters) - Leading Indian player Sania Mirza has become engaged to a business scholar from her hometown of Hyderabad but has no plans to retire from competitive tennis, domestic media reported on Friday.
The 22-year-old Mirza is a youth icon in a nation starved for sporting success after she became the first Indian to win a WTA tour title and break into the world's top 50 in 2005 but has struggled to live up to early expectations.
The pair were unlikely to tie the knot in the near future, however, as her 23-year-old fiance Sohrab Mirza planned to pursue higher studies, reports quoted family members as saying.
Mirza has been plagued by injuries over the last two seasons but has continued playing despite being frustrated by a series of court petitions attributed mostly to people trying to grab media attention.

mike tyson daughter picture

The news that Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter died after getting tangled up in a home treadmill scares parents, especially those who haven't got around to childproofing their homes. So Peter Kerin, a childproofing expert shows the three most common safety issues in the typical home.
"Number one is definitely falls, from babies through toddlerhood into the preteen years, falls is the number one injury of children in the home," said Kerin, who owns Foresight Childproofing.
When your children are younger, you need to keep them away from stairs.
"You want a mounted gate, you don't want a pressure gate," said Kerin. "Everyone's hesitant to do it, but they're minimally intrusive, and the patching a small hole in a banister is a lot easier than patching the child."

new teacher project

WASHINGTON (AP) — When school starts next fall, Teach for America will send an unprecedented number of college graduates to teach in poor communities across the country — but not as many as the group would like.
Teach for America this year chose 4,100 recruits from more than 35,000 applications. While the group has never accepted every applicant, this was the first time it had to turn down people who met all its rigorous criteria.
"For the last nine years, really the only constraint on our growth has been recruits, just finding enough people who we really believe are ready for this," said Wendy Kopp, the group's founder and chief executive.

hoosier lottery

The winning Hoosier Lotto numbers drawn Wednesday are 4, 15, 22, 30, 32 and 45.
Twenty tickets match five numbers and are worth $508 each.
Meanwhile, one ticket sold in South Dakota for the Powerball game's $232.1 million jackpot Wednesday night matched all six numbers drawn. Those numbers are 5, 6, 12, 16, 21 and the Powerball, 7. The Power Play was 3.
The prize reverts to an estimated $20 million for Saturday.

Twelve tickets, including one sold in Indiana, match the first five numbers but not the Powerball and are worth $200,000 each.

None of the tickets sold for the latest Hoosier Lotto game matches all six numbers drawn, so the jackpot rises to an estimated $3 million for Saturday's drawing.

jet america airlines website

Jet America Airlines Offers to Travel For 9 Dollar Only.

Want cheap flights to travel airways? Jet America Airlines offer the cheapest airline tickets, just for 9 dollars. From 13 July 2009,the cheap airfare will start with a Boeing 737-800 jet.
Jet America Airlines 9 dollar cheap tickets will get the discount travelers from Newark, NJ to Toledo. There will be only nine seats in each flight that will cost nine dollars each. According to Tampa bay Jet America Airlines will make money from additional fees, just like other low cost airlines.
Jet America Airlines seems to follow what Cebu Pacific in the Philippines is doing. Cebu Pacific offers just 1 peso airfare (less than $0.10). This fare of course doesn’t include other miscellaneous costs, like taxes. But still, this kind of promo or deal attracts air travelers.

jet america airlines

Jet America has opened up its reservations for flights starting on July 13. And as promised, the flights will be super cheap.

Fares will start around $9 each way out of Toledo (for only nine seats) but much like Ryanair, Jet America will make most of its money on fees. According to the St. Petersburg Times:

Jet America will charge an additional $20 for a round-trip with an assigned seat, $20 to buy a ticket by phone and $10 to book on the Web site (www.jetamerica.com).

We actually found that Jet America charges a $5 "convenience fee" if you book on JetAmerica.com (not $10) which means that $9 fare each-way is really $14. But the website was incredibly slow loading pages this morning and we couldn't see what their checked luggage fees are but we expect them to be similar to other airlines.

white tiger

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — An animal keeper was mauled to death Wednesday by a rare white tiger at a wildlife park in New Zealand while visitors watched in horror, police said. The animal _ one of only 120 white tigers in the world _ was killed because it wouldn't release the keeper's body, police inspector Paul Dimmery told National Radio.

South African national Dalu Mncube was attacked after he and a colleague entered the cage at Zion Wildlife Park on New Zealand's North Island to clean it, police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said.

There was "nothing to indicate why it attacked _ but the fact is they're wild animals," Dimmery added

korea

What do we know about North Korea that we did not already know three or five years ago? The North Koreans have the material, the will, and the expertise to produce nuclear weapons.
These recent tests demonstrate both how serious the North Koreans are and how manifestly unserious the United States remains. Throughout the Clinton, Bush, and now the Obama administrations, we have lived under the delusion that we could negotiate with the North Koreans or the even more absurd notion that we could use China to pressure them. None of this has worked. We are not going to stop North Korea from seeking to produce nuclear weapons unless we do one of two things. First, we could launch a preemptive nuclear strike on their nuclear-weapons facilities and their major cities — so as to both reduce their capability and preempt a lethal conventional counterattack by North Korea on South Korea or Japan.

race

There are still way too many bad early IRL-types in the race, drivers with heart but sometimes not enough skill and experience and often rotten, cheap and even unsafe equipment. There was a lousy start because 11 rows of three cars each for some reason can't be achieved by this crowd for even one full lap, and only 20 cars finished --- but there were no serious injuries (Vitor Meira's scary late-race wreck broke two vertebrae in his back but no surgery is necessary and he's moving all his limbs).
Danica Patrick won an IndyCar race at Motegi, Japan last year, the first woman ever to do so; her third at Indy this weekend proved she's no fluke of a race winnerCastroneves also gave Roger Penske his 15th Indy win as a team owner.

swine flu may 25

The worldwide death toll for swine flu was creeping up to triple digits on Monday with new deaths in North America, while a clutch of new cases emerged in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
According to the latest United Nations' World Health Organisation tally, 12,515 people have been infected with A(H1N1) across 46 countries, including 91 deaths.
The figure represents a rise of 493 cases on the previous WHO total and included five new deaths in Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak, but did not include the newest three Mexico deaths, one more fatality in Canada and two more deaths in the United States, bringing the global toll to 97.
Mexico's Health Ministry on Monday confirmed a rise in the country's flu deaths to 83, with more than 4,458 confirmed infections from the virus.

memory cats

Surprise singing sensation Susan Boyle made a new television appearance, showcasing once again her soaring voice — but refusing to compromise on the frumpy look that made her an Internet sensation.
The shy church volunteer gave a rousing, but occasionally nervous, performance on the "American Idol"-style show "Britain's Got Talent," with a version of the song "Memory" from the musical "Cats."
Members of the public voting in a telephone poll picked her as the best of eight performers who appeared Sunday, meaning she will sing again in the contest's final next Saturday.
Producers said the 47-year-old's appearance was being posted on the Internet almost immediately, after about 60 million people watched her last performance via YouTube.

chocolate souffle

Easy Chocolate Soufflé Recipe - Ingredients

  • 100g good quality dark chocolate (I used Lindt Excellence 50% Cocoa solids)
  • 50g Golden Caster Sugar
  • 4 Egg Whites
  • 2 Egg Yolks
  • Butter
  • Single Cream, optional
I was watching “Willie’s Chocolate Revolution” on TV recently when I saw a chocolate soufflé and realised I’d never made one before. Sure, I’ve made soufflés before, but never a chocolate one. No matter how much I tried to ignore it, I couldn’t stop thinking of it. I just had to make one.

GILBERT (AP) — The National Guard is helping residents in West Virginia’s southern coalfields recover from weekend flooding that destroyed at least 300 buildings, knocked out power and caused mudslides that flushed trash, debris and at least one mobile home downstream.

Gov. Joe Manchin toured the region and activated 300 Guard troops Sunday on top of the 30 he called up a day before when he declared a state of emergency for six counties, said Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management spokesman Robert Jelacic.
Emergency crews, residents and business owners — some covered in mud — assessed the damage in Gilbert and used shovels to clean up after downpours dumped several inches of rain Friday and Saturday. On the road leading to the town of about 400 people,

Gary Dell Abate( Baba Booey) first pitch fail

Baba Booey’s First Pitch at the mets games was really botched. Howard Stern’s longtime producer, Gary "Baba Booey" Dell’Abate, was scheduled to throw out the first pitch for Saturday’s game between the Buccos and the Mets. For weeks, Dell’Abate was nothing short of terrified about the event, going to the lengths of hiring a pitching coach to practice with. And guess what? He had every reason to fear the worst.
As you can see in the video below, Dell ‘Abate nearly takes out the home plate umpire, which wouldn’t have been so bad except for the fact that he wasn’t yet behind home plate. For Dell’Abate, this would definitely qualify as "worst-case scenario". Expect the Booey-razzing to come early and often when the Stern Show resumes on Monday.

miss rhode island

Here are pictures of Miss Rhode Island 2009 Alysha Castonguay.
Alysha Castonguay appeared in Maxim and says Carrie Prejean and her have something in common. What is it? Take a guess. You’ll probably get it right.
Alysha Castonguay’s name is pronounced with the “u” silent. But Alysha wasn’t silent in telling Miss USA pageant officials that she had previously posed nude for Maxim Magazine before entering their competition. Yes, like Prejean, Rhode Island took her clothes off for the camera before entering the competition, but unlike Prejean she told the competition about it ahead of time, even showed them the pictures and they alleged approved her entry.

mother s day

My mama is the best in the world. She is the one that is always so strong in our family.
Yes in deed this is one of the most special days for the most deserving ones, our Mothers! When you are young, mothers are there for you anytime and anywhere. You may not recognize it at that time but as your grow older you realize just how much your mother means to you. And even then they are still there for you. A mother’s love never changes; it doesn’t get more or less over the years. Mothers love their children with the deepest, eternal love there is. So we must show thanks for that. We also must salute all mothers for their hard work. Not only do most mothers work a full career but they are there for us when ever we need them.

e cigarette

An e cigarette: A kind of a grag.
SEBRING - Jim Narbone tells the story of a man who used an electronic cigarette in a restaurant. The LED tip glowed red, and the man exhaled what looked like smoke.
People across the restaurant were upset," said Narbone, the manager of Bebe's Tobacco, a shop beside Sweetbay grocery in south Sebring. They thought he was smoking a cigarette.
In fact, it's an e-cigarette, which uses a lithium ion battery to deliver a nicotine solution without the tar and the other carcinogens and toxins.
The man was exhaling atomized air. What looked like smoke were tiny water particles, colorless, almost odorless, containing nicotine and propylene glycol (a propane-alcohol gel).

CLEVELAND (AP) — When Connie Culp heard a little kid call her a monster because of the shotgun blast that left her face horribly disfigured, she pulled out her driver's license to show the child what she used to look like. Years later, as the nation's first face transplant recipient, she's stepped forward to show the rest of the world what she looks like now
Her expressions are still a bit wooden, but she can talk, smile, smell and taste her food again. Her speech is at times a little tough to understand. Her face is bloated and squarish. Her skin droops in big folds that doctors plan to pare away as her circulation improves and her nerves grow, animating her new muscles.
