Five things to know in Prince William County today

1. Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton is set to make a big announcement tomorrow about commuter parking in eastern Prince William. We’re hearing the state may build a new 1,000-space commuter lot in the Woodbridge area in the aftermath of Potomac Mills mall's drastic reduction in commuter spots. As we 1st reported February. 14, a deal is still in the works for commuter parking at First Baptist Church on Minnieville Road.

2. Registration for the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon opens at noon today. The 36th edition of the annual run from Arlington to the Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington is scheduled for October. 30. Those interested in running can register at marinemarathon.com. Last year, nearly 22,000 runners from the United States. and 54 countries participated in the marathon.

3. Ross Murphy, a local publisher and recently published author, will present the program “Publishing: Today and Tomorrow” tonight at the Central Community Library in Manassas. The program begins at 7 p.m.

4. Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative has tallied totals from the January. 26 “thundersnow” storm that dumped about eight inches on the D.C. area. They report that repair crews responded to 604 outage locations, restoring power to a total of 35,733 customers. The number of individual outage locations exceeded what NOVEC experienced with Hurricane Isabel in 2003.
