man killed at phillies game
In the Fox Network game of the week late yesterday afternoon, the first-place Phillies pummeled the first-place Cardinals, 14-6. Jimmy Rollins pounded the Cards for a grand slam in the 6th inning, and Shane Victorino whacked reliever Jason Motte two pitches later for a homer of his own.
After Chase Utley reduced Motte to applesauce with a line drive double, Dennys Reyes replaced him, but the Fightin' Phils continued the assault in the next inning too.
Now, notice the aggressive verbs and other language above. This is common in sports reporting. Teams "square off" as though boxing, a defensive back "takes a head off" with "a vicious hit," and so forth.
Unfortunately, the fighting became all too real at and outside Citizens Bank Park yesterday, as a 22-year-old man was beaten to death in a fight that "spilled out" of a restaurant in the ballpark and apparently ended in a parking lot at 7th and Pattison Avenues, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. A 30-year-old man is in "stable condition" in the hospital closest to the ballpark. This occurred "as the Phillies played the St. Louis Cardinals."
