Blizzard expected to set North Jersey snowfall records for the Dec. 27
Snowfall totals in the region are expected to surpass record levels, Bob Ziff, a spokesman for the North Jersey Weather Observers, said Monday morning.
The record for Dec. 27 had been 7 inches, which was set in 1984.
In Hawthorne, the record for the date had been 6.3 inches, also in 1984.
“That’s totally blown out,” Ziff said even with the final number yet to be tabulated.
The heaviest snowfall came between 9 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. 11 inches fell in Ramsey during that time.
The snow largely stopped in North Jersey about 3:45 a.m., Ziff said. However, high winds and unplowed roads and highway ramps made getting to work difficult, even for the veteran weather observer.
He said passed a burned out shell of a bus on northbound Route 17 near Racetrack Road in Ho-Ho-Kus and several abandoned cars.
“If I didn’t have to go to work this morning, I definitely would not have been on the road,” he said.
People lucky enough to be home instead of at work may not enjoy the snow as much as they would like. It’s light and powdery, and while it cleans off cars easily, it does not clump together well.
